NORTH CASCADES

Here you’ll find big climbs (and accompanying big big views) on roads that spend much of the year under multiple feet of snow. So take advantage of them during the few months that they’re open. Also included are heavenly routes through the beloved Methow Valley on the high, dry eastern flank of the Cascades.

34 EVERSON TO MOUNT BAKER

Difficulty Very Strenuous

Time 5½ to 8 hours

Distance 99 miles

Elevation Gain 7210 feet

ROAD CONDITIONS: Rural farm roads with chip-seal surfaces and steep, winding mountain road with varying shoulder widths. Note: Because of the area’s prodigious annual snowfall, the road is clear to Artist Point for only about two months each year, usually starting in mid-July. The road is usually clear of snow to just above the Mount Baker Ski Area, about 2.5 miles and 800 feet below Artist Point.

GETTING THERE: From Bellingham, head east on SR 542 (Mount Baker Hwy.) for about 5 miles and turn left onto Everson–Goshen Rd. Follow for about 8 miles into Everson. (Along the way, the road becomes SR 544.) In town, the road becomes Main St.; park in the grocery store parking lot in the center of town or on Main St. itself.
